India Sets Global Precedent by Defining New Green Hydrogen Standard

Green Hydrogen Standard: India has unveiled a new comprehensive framework to categorize Green Hydrogen through the unveiling of the “Green Hydrogen Standard for India.” This path-breaking initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) under the auspices of the Indian government, establishes a new paradigm for hydrogen production aligned with renewable sources.

The announcement comes as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, signaling India’s resolute commitment to mitigating environmental impact while harnessing the potential of hydrogen energy. The scope of this standard encompasses both electrolysis-based and biomass-based methods of hydrogen production, making it a definitive move towards fostering innovation across the green energy spectrum.

New Green Hydrogen Standard : emission must not exceed 2 kg CO2 equivalent per kg of hydrogen produced

Following exhaustive deliberations with stakeholders from diverse sectors, the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has defined Green Hydrogen as meeting stringent well-to-gate emission parameters. This encompasses the entire hydrogen production cycle, including water treatment, electrolysis, gas purification, drying, and hydrogen compression. The core criterion mandates that the emission must not exceed 2 kg CO2 equivalent per kg of hydrogen produced.

To ensure the credibility and rigor of this momentous regulation, the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy is poised to articulate a meticulous methodology encompassing measurement, reporting, monitoring, on-site verification, and certification of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

The pivotal responsibility of accrediting agencies for monitoring, verification, and certification of Green Hydrogen production projects will lie with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a division of the Ministry of Power. This strategic appointment underlines the government’s proactive stance in enforcing high standards of environmental stewardship within the burgeoning hydrogen economy.

The long-awaited announcement of the Green Hydrogen Standard has invigorated India’s clean energy enthusiasts, providing a definitive framework for the industry’s growth trajectory. With this proclamation, India ascends to the vanguard of nations driving sustainable practices and joins the select league of global pioneers in defining and regulating Green Hydrogen production.

As the world witnesses this paradigm shift in energy strategy, India’s resolute commitment to a greener future resonates globally. The Green Hydrogen Standard stands as a testament to India’s resolve to shape an eco-conscious energy landscape, inspiring nations to follow suit and fostering international cooperation towards a carbon-neutral world.
