Bharat Biotech Developing 5 Promising Gene, Cell Therapies for cancer and rare genetic disorders

Hyderabad, India – March 21, 2025: Bharat Biotech, known for its pioneering world-class, safe and affordable vaccines, has made its foray into Cell & Gene Therapy (CGT) working on 5 new products around gene and cell therapy. To meet this goal the vaccine firm has announced a new facility at Genome Valley, to mark an exciting step for the company as it expands its work from vaccines to new, cutting-edge treatments for rare diseases and cancer.

The new 50,000-square-foot facility will focus on developing personalized therapies to treat serious conditions like blood cancers, genetic disorders, and other rare diseases. Bharat Biotech’s move into CGT is not just about growing the business but also about making life-saving treatments more affordable and accessible to people around the world.

A New Approach to Treating Serious Diseases

The new facility is part of Bharat Biotech’s goal to tackle some of the world’s most challenging diseases. Dr. Krishna Ella, Executive Chairman of Bharat Biotech, said, “Gene and cell therapies are the future of medicine. With our experience in vaccine production, we are ready to take on the challenges of these new therapies and provide treatments to people who need them most.”

One of the key projects at the facility is developing CD19 CAR T-cell therapy, which is a new type of treatment for blood cancers like leukemia. This therapy works by using a patient’s own immune cells to attack cancer cells, offering new hope to people who haven’t responded to other treatments.

The facility will also focus on treating genetic diseases like hemophilia, which causes problems with blood clotting, offering the chance for long-term treatments that could cure these conditions.

Bharat Biotech Initiative A Strategic Move to Make Cell and Gene Therapy Treatment Accessible to All

Dr. Raches Ella, Chief Development Officer at Bharat Biotech, explained, “Cell and gene therapies have huge potential, but the biggest challenge has always been how expensive they are. Our goal is to make these treatments affordable and available to people all over the world, not just those in rich countries. We are optimistic that we will be able to roll out 2 to 3 products within the next 3 years, from our pipeline of 2 Cell and 3 Gene Therapies.”

The facility’s focus is on providing therapies for both cancer and rare genetic disorders, helping patients who might otherwise have limited treatment options. Bharat Biotech hopes to make these therapies not only effective but also affordable for people in India and other countries with limited access to advanced medical care.

Collaborating for Innovation with University of Wisconsin

Bharat Biotech is working with leading scientists and universities to push the boundaries of CGT. For example, the company has partnered with the University of Wisconsin, Madison, to develop CAR T-cell therapies, with a special focus on using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve treatment outcomes.

Professor Krishanu Saha from the University of Wisconsin shared his excitement about the collaboration, saying, “Bharat Biotech’s focus on innovation and scaling up new therapies is setting a new standard for gene therapies. Their work, including AI-driven treatments, could change the way we fight cancer.”

The new facility will also produce viral vectors, which are necessary for many gene therapies. Being able to produce these vectors at large scale will be key to making gene therapies work on a bigger level.

Affordable, Life-Saving Treatments

With its advanced technology and a focus on quality control, Bharat Biotech’s new facility is set to become a leader in the gene therapy field. The company is committed to ensuring that these new therapies are not only effective but also affordable, making them available to more patients in need.

Along with cancer and genetic disorders, the new facility will work on therapies for other complex diseases, helping to push forward the future of personalized medicine.

A Vision for Better Global Health

This new facility shows Bharat Biotech’s ongoing commitment to improving healthcare worldwide. By combining cutting-edge technology, expert partnerships, and a focus on making treatments affordable, Bharat Biotech is bringing the latest medical advances to people who need them most.

As Dr. Krishna Ella said, “For years, our focus has been on making vaccines that save lives. Now, with cell and gene therapies, we are expanding our mission to help people with some of the most difficult diseases, providing them with life-changing treatments.”

The opening of Bharat Biotech’s CGT facility is an important step in the fight against rare diseases and cancer. This new initiative offers hope for a healthier future, where more people have access to life-saving treatments.
