Cygni Energy, Indus Towers to Build 1.5 GWh BESS Capacity

Hyderabad, October 5, 2026: Cygni Energy Private Limited and Indus Towers Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration on energy storage solutions for telecom infrastructure in India, with the proposed partnership envisaging Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing capacity of up to 1.5 GWh.

The agreement comes as telecom infrastructure operators increasingly look to energy storage to improve the reliability and efficiency of power systems supporting tower networks. The proposed collaboration is expected to evaluate advanced battery technologies specifically suited to telecom applications, while supporting the development of domestic manufacturing capabilities.

For India’s telecom sector, the initiative could mark a significant step towards integrating higher-capacity and more advanced battery systems into a large-scale infrastructure environment. Energy storage plays a critical role in maintaining continuity of operations at telecom sites, particularly where grid reliability varies or backup power is required.

Under the proposed collaboration, Cygni Energy and Indus Towers will assess opportunities to establish BESS manufacturing capacity of up to 1.5 GWh. The companies also intend to explore battery technologies that can improve system reliability, energy efficiency and the sustainability of telecom operations.

Cygni Energy Founder and CEO Venkat Rajaraman said the initiative is intended to go beyond battery supply and focus on building the manufacturing scale and technology capabilities required to meet the evolving energy requirements of telecom infrastructure.

According to Rajaraman, Cygni plans to develop capacity of up to 2 GWh, while expanding its product portfolio from existing 100Ah battery solutions to higher-capacity 314Ah systems and emerging battery technologies.

The move reflects a broader shift in India’s energy-storage industry towards larger-format batteries and application-specific solutions. Telecom infrastructure represents a sizeable potential market for BESS manufacturers, given the sector’s extensive network of distributed sites and its requirement for dependable backup power.

Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Institute Professor at IIT Madras and Chairman of ITEL Foundation, said collaboration among users, startups, manufacturers and technology institutions can help accelerate the development and adoption of energy-storage solutions in India.

“Telecom provides an important application for advancing battery technologies and manufacturing capabilities in this space,” Jhunjhunwala said.

The partnership also comes against the backdrop of India’s push to strengthen domestic energy-storage manufacturing and build more resilient supply chains for critical infrastructure. For telecom operators, greater availability of locally engineered and manufactured storage systems could support technology localisation while reducing dependence on imported solutions.

Cygni Energy, incubated at IIT Madras, has capabilities across battery engineering, Battery Management Systems, battery-pack manufacturing and energy-storage solutions. Its products address applications including telecom, stationary energy storage and mobility.

With the telecom industry continuing to expand its digital infrastructure footprint, the Cygni Energy-Indus Towers initiative highlights the growing intersection between telecom infrastructure, battery technology and India’s domestic energy-storage manufacturing ecosystem.
