Hyderabad, January 3, 2026: Aquaculture is emerging as a pivotal force in the global food landscape, offering an answer to the increasing demand for high-protein, nutrient-rich food. In 2021, the global aquaculture industry was valued at USD 263.90 billion, with projections estimating it will grow to USD 401.03 billion by 2028. Yet, in India, the sector is still largely dominated by traditional methods, many of which struggle to meet the demands of sustainability, disease control, water efficiency, and the unpredictability of seasons.
However, something remarkable is about to unfold in the heart of the Deccan Plateau.
Over the past few years, a young entrepreneur has been working on a vision many thought unfeasible, India’s largest inland trout farm. The scale of this project is notable, not just for its size, but for its innovative use of technology and commitment to sustainable practices. What makes this venture even more remarkable is its location: Hyderabad, a city faraway from the cool, freshwater environments traditionally associated with trout farming.
Trout, a prized and often delicate, healthful fish species, demands very specific conditions to thrive. Maintaining the right water temperature, oxygen levels, and water quality is no easy feat, especially in a region that experiences hot temperatures for much of the year. In fact, for most aquaculture operations, these requirements are non-negotiable deal-breakers. But for this visionary entrepreneur, these challenges were viewed as opportunities for innovation.
Trout Farm in Hyderabad Set to Lead India’s Blue Revolution in Inland Aquaculture
The solution? A state-of-the-art farming system that uses advanced technology to maintain optimal conditions for trout farming. By rethinking traditional aquaculture models and embracing cutting-edge research, the project has turned what seemed impossible into a reality. The result is an inland farm capable of producing premium trout, a feat many once believed could not be achieved in India.

The opening of this innovative facility is set to take place in January 2026, and the event is expected to attract national attention. The inauguration ceremony will be attended by several key leaders, including Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh), the Hon’ble Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying; Shri G. Kishan Reddy, the Hon’ble Union Minister of Coal and Mines; and Shri George Kurian, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, among other dignitaries. The event will also feature prominent aquaculture experts and industry leaders from across the country, underscoring the national importance of the development.
At the heart of this pioneering venture is Aditya Rithvik Narra, the Founder and Managing Director of SmartGreen Aquaculture (SGA), the Hyderabad-based startup behind the trout farm. Narra’s commitment to blending science with sustainable practices is what makes the project stand out. SmartGreen Aquaculture isn’t just another fish farm; it is a bold step forward in transforming India’s aquaculture sector by bringing together technology, environmental responsibility, and entrepreneurial spirit.
With the official launch drawing near, anticipation is mounting. As India’s first large-scale inland trout farm opens its doors, many are asking: Can this model change the future of aquaculture in India? Early indicators suggest that SmartGreen Aquaculture is pioneering an inland blue revolution, set to open a new era for the industry, one that could influence how the country approaches sustainable farming, food production, and innovation.
With the water temperatures just right and the farm ready for operation, all eyes are now on what comes next.
