September 28, 2023, New Delhi, India – In the latest Global Innovation Index 2023 (GII) ranking, India has retained its 40th position out of 132 economies, as reported by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This achievement signifies India’s continued ascent in the field of innovation, with significant progress made in recent years.
India’s remarkable journey in the GII began in 2015 when the nation held the 81st rank. The consistent improvement over the years is attributed to the nation’s vast knowledge capital, a thriving startup ecosystem, and commendable efforts by both public and private research organizations.
Government departments, including the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Biotechnology, the Department of Space, and the Department of Atomic Energy, alongside ministries like the Ministry of Electronics and IT, Department of Telecommunications, Department of Agricultural Research & Education, and the Department of Health Research, have played pivotal roles in enriching the National Innovation Ecosystem. Notably, the Atal Innovation Mission has been instrumental in expanding this ecosystem.
The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog has been relentless in its efforts to promote policy-led innovation in various sectors such as electric vehicles, biotechnology, nanotechnology, space exploration, and alternative energy sources. It has also extended its reach to states and districts, fostering innovation at the grassroots level. NITI Aayog has consistently monitored and evaluated India’s position in global rankings, including the GII.
The Global Innovation Index 2023 serves as a reliable tool for governments worldwide to assess innovation-led social and economic changes within their respective countries. Over the years, it has emerged as a crucial policy instrument, enabling governments to critically analyze their existing status and identify areas for improvement.
