Mamaearth: From Newborn to Unicorn in 5 Years

Mamaearth, a newborn and mother care brand, which began its journey as a startup in 2016 is now a Unicorn. The 5 year old startup has raised roughly $80 million in its most recent investment round led by Sequoia Capital, making it a unicorn. Mamaearth is owned by Honasa Consumer.

In 2021, the baby and mother care company became the 43rd unicorn startup, and it is one of the uncommon unicorns with a woman as its co-founder.

The company’s valuation has risen to $730 million after it received $50 million in a fundraising round headed by Sofina Ventures in July 2021.

According to regulatory documents, Mamaearth has approved the allocation of 1,741 Series F preference shares at an issue price of $45,294.33 to raise $79.5 million.

Launched in 2016, Mamaearth is one of the fastest-growing brands in India’s FMCG sector. It has grown to 140-odd SKUs in baby care, skincare, and haircare segments, and has served more than five million consumers across 500 cities.

Founded by husband-wife duo Ghazal and Varun Alagh, the Gurugram-based startup crossed an annual revenue run rate of $100 million (Rs 700 crore) in the financial year 2021.

Earlier this month, Mamaearth acquired parenting content platform Momspresso and associated influencer marketing platform, Momspresso MyMoney for an undisclosed amount.

Mamaearth has employed a house-of-brands strategy through which it wants to go deeper in the direct-to-consumer beauty and personal care segment.

The startup’s key competitors include WOW Skin Science, Body Cupid, SkinKraft, Juicy Chemistry, and Plum, among others.

The D2C beauty and personal care segment is projected to be worth $28 billion by 2025, according to an Avendus report.

The founders journey is interestingly written. It says – began when we, Ghazal and Varun, were expecting our first child. That’s the time we turned from a bungee jumping, pub hopping, carefree couple to basically a couple of safety wardens. Everything had to be safe, kosher & googled. When the morning sickness became a routine, we were shocked to find that there were no safer alternatives to pills and ended up having to struggle a lot.

After 9 rigorous months, we were finally blessed with our tiny little bundle of joy and just like you and every other parent in the world; we too wanted the best for our cute bambino. So we wore our spyglasses & did all the possible research available. Whoa, we were shocked to see how most baby products, be it lotion or shampoo contained toxins which have proven to be harmful to the little ones.

We were worried sick and it wasn’t just our baby we were worried about but also for all the little ones we knew in our friend circle. That’s when we decided to do something about it & create products which were completely safe & certified toxin free.

A brand, by a parent, for the parent. A brand which develops products from world-class research and attempts to solve every little problem that we as parents face. With the aim of making products which are mum-baby friendly, toxin-free, meet stringent international standards & are basically ultra awesome, MamaEarth was born.
