Biotech Startups to Benefit from ₹20 Crore NBEC 2026 Fund

Bengaluru, Tuesday, May 5, 2026: Accelerating India’s biotech ambitions, the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms has unveiled the ninth edition of the National Bio Entrepreneurship Competition (NBEC) 2026, rolling out one of the country’s largest funding opportunities for early-stage life sciences startups.

Launched at its Bengaluru campus in the presence of Karnataka IT/BT Minister Priyank Kharge and C-CAMP CEO Taslimarif Saiyed, the programme signals a sharper push to convert lab research into scalable, market-ready ventures.

Now in its ninth year, NBEC has evolved into a major launchpad for science-driven entrepreneurship. Since 2017, the competition has attracted over 21,000 applications and supported more than 130 winning ideas, collectively unlocking upwards of ₹40 crore in grants and investment avenues.

For 2026, the stakes are significantly higher. The competition will offer up to ₹20 crore in prizes and investment opportunities, placing it among India’s most substantial biotech startup platforms. Applications remain open until May 31.

NBEC 2026 embarks on a Dual-track model to widen participation

NBEC 2026 introduces parallel tracks aimed at both startups and student innovators. While student teams can secure prizes of up to ₹10 lakh, the startup category will access the lion’s share of funding, including potential investor backing.

Beyond funding, shortlisted participants will enter a structured support system, mentorship from industry experts and an intensive boot camp focused on business strategy and commercialization.

Expanding the innovation pipeline

The competition spans a wide spectrum of sectors, from healthcare, vaccines, diagnostics, and AI-driven digital health to agritech, environmental biotechnology, and clean energy.

Importantly, organisers highlight a growing geographic spread. Applications have come from 35 states and union territories, with increasing participation from Tier II and Tier III cities, signalling a shift away from metro-centric innovation.

A calculated push in deep tech

The initiative aligns with a broader national effort to strengthen biotechnology and deep-tech ecosystems, where longer development cycles and funding gaps often slow progress. Backed by agencies such as the Department of Biotechnology and NITI Aayog, C-CAMP has supported over 650 startups and built a network of more than 3,000 entrepreneurs.

Industry observers see NBEC not just as a competition, but as a strategic bridge—connecting scientific talent with capital at an early stage. With global competition intensifying in areas like genomics, therapeutics, and climate biotech, such platforms are becoming critical to maintaining India’s innovation edge.

With a record prize pool and expanded scope, NBEC 2026 is set to deepen India’s biotech startup pipeline, particularly by bringing non-metro innovators into the fold and fast-tracking the journey from research labs to venture-backed enterprises.

Where to apply: The call for applications for NBEC 2026 has been officially launched today and will be accepting applications from startups, individual innovators and students till 31st May 2026- https://www.nationalbioentrepreneurship.in/
