New Microdata Portal, AI Tool Boost India’s Statistics System

April 7, 2025: In a major push to improve data accessibility and enhance the Official Statistical System in India, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) has unveiled a revamped Microdata Portal at the recently held Conference of State Government Ministers.

This new portal aims to provide easier access to extensive statistical data, including information from national surveys and economic censuses.

Developed in collaboration with the World Bank Technology Team, the updated portal addresses technological limitations of its predecessor. With a modern and scalable technology stack, it ensures compliance with the latest security standards and offers a responsive design that enhances the user experience.

The portal serves as a centralized repository for critical data, simplifying access for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders. It can be accessed at https://microdata.gov.in

India’s MOSPI Launches Modernized Microdata Portal and Training Website

On the same occasion, MOSPI also launched the website for the National Statistical System Training Academy (NSSTA). This platform will centralize information related to capacity-building initiatives, making resources more accessible for those engaged in statistical and data-related work. The website can be accessed at www.nssta.gov.in.

In addition to the portals, MOSPI presented a groundbreaking Proof of Concept (PoC) for an AI/ML-based classification tool. This innovative tool uses natural language processing (NLP) to simplify the use of the National Industrial Classification (NIC) in producing official statistics.

Stakeholders can now enter text queries, which the tool then processes to suggest the top five relevant NIC codes. The AI tool aims to reduce manual effort, increase the productivity of enumerators, and improve the accuracy of data collection, ultimately leading to better policymaking.

These technological upgrades underscore MOSPI’s commitment to leveraging the latest innovations to strengthen India’s statistical infrastructure. By embracing modern tools, the ministry aims to support a more data-driven approach to policymaking, ensuring government interventions are more accurate and context-specific.

These initiatives are in line with the country’s vision of becoming a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).
