RFNBO First: AM Green Signs 500,000 TPA Clean Fuel Pact with Uniper

Hyderabad, January 12, 2026: AM Green Ammonia India (AMG) has taken a decisive step in positioning India as a global exporter of clean fuels by signing a long-term, binding offtake agreement with Germany-based Uniper Global Commodities SE for the supply of up to 500,000 tonnes per year of renewable ammonia to Europe.

The agreement, one of the largest of its kind involving an Indian producer, marks a significant milestone in the development of cross-continental green energy supply chains.

The agreement was formally exchanged between AM Green Founder and Group Chairman Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty and Uniper CEO Michael Lewis, CBE, in the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It underscores growing strategic cooperation between India and Europe as both regions accelerate efforts to decarbonise industrial value chains.

AM Green and Uniper MoU: A milestone agreement linking India’s renewable ammonia to European demand

Under the long-term contract, Uniper will offtake renewable ammonia certified as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) from AMG’s green ammonia projects in India. The first shipments are expected as early as 2028 from AM Green’s 1 million tonnes per annum plant currently under construction at Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh. The project has already reached Final Investment Decision and is among a limited number of large-scale RFNBO-compliant green ammonia plants under construction globally.

AM Green said the agreement reinforces India’s National Hydrogen Mission and strengthens the country’s ambition to become a leading exporter of green hydrogen and green ammonia. The company is developing a portfolio of green ammonia facilities across Kakinada, Tuticorin and Kandla, backed by global investors Gentari, GIC and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, and supported by technology and engineering partners including Casale, Air Liquide, Rely, Toyo and NTPC Renewables.

“This partnership is a milestone for India’s role in the global energy transition,” said Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty, Founder and Group Chairman of AM Green. He added that AM Green’s renewable ammonia is designed to meet stringent European RFNBO standards through firm and dispatchable clean electricity solutions, enabling downstream industries to significantly reduce emissions in India and internationally.

For Uniper, the agreement represents a strategic step in building a diversified portfolio of renewable and low-carbon molecules for European industrial customers. Michael Lewis said the deal would help establish one of the first large-scale renewable ammonia supply corridors between India and Europe, supporting the decarbonisation of sectors such as chemicals, fertilisers, refining and, over time, shipping.

Michael Lewis, CBE, CEO of Uniper, said: “This agreement with AM Green Ammonia is a key building block in our strategy to provide our customers with reliable access to renewable and low carbon molecules at scale. Green ammonia stands out as one of the most promising solutions to decarbonise CO2- intensive production of chemicals, fertilizers and, through green hydrogen, also in refining. Importantly, it offers among the lowest CO2 avoidance costs compared to other renewable and low carbon molecules -thanks to its mature production process and the absence of carbon feedstock requirements. With clear, stable and credible rules – and with procurement and demand-side measures such as clear quotas for renewable molecules that reward verified CO₂-abatement performance – we can accelerate the decarbonization while safeguarding competitiveness. We are proud to help establish one of the first large-scale supply corridors between India and Europe.”

Mahesh Kolli, Co-Founder of Greenko Group and AM Green, said the partnership validates AMG’s ability to deliver low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia at globally competitive prices and at scale, supported by strong execution and long-term investor backing. John Roper, CEO Middle East at Uniper Global Commodities, described the agreement as a landmark outcome that demonstrates how aligned supply, certification and demand-side incentives can unlock competitive renewable molecules for European industry.

Once fully operational, AMG’s Kakinada project is expected to support more than 600 local jobs and help avoid nearly 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, highlighting the growing economic and environmental impact of India’s emerging green ammonia sector.
